Editorial: Working together for jobs

The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, October 6, 2009.

Congratulations,  Alabama....several thousand new jobs are coming to our state!  In times like these, we have to be excited, no matter where those new jobs are located in Alabama.  Because it can only be a matter of time before the Governor's office has an announcement like that for us...Right...right?

It's great to know that our state will get an economic boost from the announcements made within the last couple of weeks.  HK Automotive will build hybrid cars in Baldwin County and the Mobile area will benefit.  And, southern counties, Pike and Butler, in the Montgomery area, will see the addition of several hundred new jobs when a forestry company and an IT company come to Alabama.

Birmingham has so much to offer as the largest city in the state.  Where are the new job announcements for our fair city?  What are the issues...the divisions and environmental issues that prevent us from participating in economic development growth?  Would outside companies read our newspapers or watch local television news and be inspired to make Birmingham their new home.  We have been told that the Governor is just waiting for us get our act together?  Can we...are we even willing to try?  How long can we keep the champagne chilled before it goes bad?
