Routine traffic stop reveals cocaine October 5, 2009 at 7:57 PM CDT - Updated June 18 at 12:00 PM BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham Police say a routine traffic stop led to the discovery and seizure of 15 kilograms of cocaine. Birmingham Police stopped a 2004 Nissan Maxima at the Avenue I/Ensley exit off I-59 North around 6pm Friday night for a traffic violation. By the time they finished searching the car they had recovered half a million dollars worth of cocaine, and arrested 2 men who may face federal drug trafficking charges. Birmingham police say Interstates 59, 20, and 65 are all major drug routes and that they're glad to take this much product off the streets. "That's a pretty big hit to take off the streets in Birmingham," said Sgt. Shelia Finney. "The drug trade is pretty rampant. That's about $500,000 worth of dope.
