Local company offering a 'foundation' for business

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Barber Companies is offering an interesting incentive for people looking to start a business in downtown Birmingham--they are giving away an empty lot for free.

David Barber announced he will give away the land to a business that either moves, relocates or expands into the city. The 4,000 square foot area is located at Second Avenue North and Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard, across the street from the City Federal condominiums.

Vice President of Corporate Development Don Erwin said company officials realize the importance of attracting business to downtown, and they hope this incentive helps.

"What we're doing is challenging other land owners and companies to come up with innovative ways to attract more business to downtown, and make it more vital than ever." said Erwin.

President of Operation New Birmingham Michael Calvert says bringing in new businesses will help existing businesses, and only make the area stronger.

"We applaud this initiative," said Calvert, "We are hopeful this will prompt some people to consider making an an investment that they wouldn't have normally made."

Calvert and Erwin said the location is in a high traffic area, and would be the perfect place for many types of business.

"It is right in the middle of the business district, and it is central to where people work and where people are living," said Erwin, "There are a lot of advantages for a company locating here."

Those interested in taking Barber up on his offer are asked to submit a written proposal explaining their plans for the lot. Here's their website.
