Several shootings reported in the Birmingham area

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - It was a busy day for officers from the west precinct of the Birmingham Police Department.  Between 11:15 Tuesday morning and 1:00 Tuesday afternoon, three people were shot and injured.  One other man was killed.  The Jefferson County Coroner identified him as 31-year old Christopher Lamont Woods of Childersburg.

The first shooting happened around 11:15 a.m. in Pratt City.  Officers found one man lying in front of the American Lumber Company. Investigators say he had been shot across the street at 7th Street Pratt City and Avenue W.  The second victim drove about a half a mile to a gas station along Dugan Avenue to get help.  Clifton McElroy was there when he arrived.  "He was in bad shape," McElroy told reporters

"We don't know whether they shot each other or someone else came by and shot them," said Birmingham Police Spokesman, Sgt. Johnny Williams, Jr.

As officers worked that scene, others worked a shooting that took place at Pike Road and Avenue I in Ensley.  Then, just over an hour later, police rushed to a fourth shooting scene at the "M & N" convenience store along 24th Street Southwest and Pearson Avenue.  "Two guys walked out of the store.  One walked out yelling stop.  Stop.  He shot twice, hit the guy.  The guy shot back," said a witness on the scene.  Another one yelled out in frustration.  "This shouldn't have even happened.  It's unnecessary and doesn't make sense," the man yelled.  Police say the customer and the clerk got into an altercation that escalated once they got outside and that is when gunfire was exchanged.

Within two hours, there were four victims.  Police say it's unfortunate considering the city's been fairly quiet the last few weeks.  "It's disturbing this would happen in a close period of time in one precinct," Williams said.  "Hopefully the community will help us locate the perpetrators and bring them to justice."
