Langford declares 'flea emergency' in West End

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford has declared a 'flea emergency' in a West End neighborhood. The mayor says it is infested with fleas.

On Tuesday, he sent public works crews to the neighborhood, as well as animal control officers to round up stray animals.

Parents say they noticed the problem after their children were bitten by fleas while walking to and from school.

The Birmingham School Board sent someone to spray for fleas at Hemphill Elementary.
