SCLC calls for state takeover at Jeffco worker rally

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The Jefferson County chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference says they would like to see the state take over the management of Jefferson County.

The Pastor Calvin Woods says the SCLC and Jefferson County workers want the County Commission to vote for bringing workers back on the job September 21st. The SCLC is also asking for Governor Bob Riley to come and take control of the county from county commissioners.

The Jefferson County Commission is expected to vote at 10 o'clock on Tuesday on a resolution asking county workers to come back next Monday. So far, Commissioners Bobby Humphreys, William Bell and Shelia Smoot support the resolution. Commissioners Bettye Fine Collins and Jim Carns oppose it, saying it may be illegal to bring back workers if the county cannot pay their salaries.
