Some county workers plan to return to work

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Some of the Jefferson County workers on administrative leave said they planned to return to work Monday, but not because they were asked.

Workers with the county's street and sanitation department said they would report to work Monday morning because it was the original day they were supposed to come back.

However, county commissioners said last week employees currently on administrative leave would not be allowed to return to work until September 21 at the earliest.

Commissioners Bobby Humphreys, William Bell and Sheila Smoot last week supported a resolution allowing the employees to return to work September 21.  Commissioners Bettye Fine Collins and Jim Carns did not support the resolution, saying bringing the workers back without enough money to pay them could cause legal problems.

Collins has said the county would not have enough money to pay the employees until October at the earliest.
