BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham police investigators said Thursday they had charged a suspect in connection with two homicides from 2005.

Police said Richard Johnston, 32, was charged with two counts of capital murder.  Johnston is currently incarcerated in Holman Prison.

Investigators said Johnston, 32, was charged with the murders of Michael Goodrich, 28, and Amanda Whitten, 17, after Birmingham's Cold Case Unit uncovered new information in the case.  Goodrich and Whitten were found dead in a burned pickup truck in the 700 block of Antwerp Ave. at 3:45 a.m. on August 6, 2005.  Fire investigators at the time determined accelerant was used to start the fire.

Birmingham Police said Detective Roy Bristow recently gathered new information on the case which helped aid in identifying the suspect.
