BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Thieves are targeting trucks more in Alabama.
Pickup trucks ranked second and third among the most stolen vehicles in a study released Monday by the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
The 2008 numbers show the 1989 Chevy Conventional cab 4X2 was the second most stolen vehicle in the state followed by the 1998 Ford 150 pickup in third.
The 1996 Honda Accord was the most stolen car in Alabama in 2008.
According to the NICB, the parts can be stripped from a car at a chop shop and sold for at least twice as much as the value of the vehicle on the used car market.
Newer model vehicles are typically more difficult to steal due to anti-theft technology.
The Columbus, Georgia-Alabama Metro area had the state's highest auto theft rate at 555 per 100,000 vehicles. Mobile was second, followed by Birmingham and Montgomery.
