New grocery chain to Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -  Birmingham's West End will soon have a major new business for neighborhood shoppers.

Mayor Langford will announce early this week that an unnamed national grocery chain will put a new store into one of 2 locations in the west end.  One of the sites being considered is the abandoned Food World property in the Heritage shopping center.

City officials say they're hoping to make several grocery store-related announcements soon including the long-rumored possibility of a store in the downtown city center.

"There were 5 or 6 sites the mayor showed this company, and he was very excited about all 5 or 6 sites getting a grocery store chain," City Council President Carole Smitherman said.
