Jefferson County battles swine flu

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Several schools across Jefferson county try to calm parents' concerns while also fighting the swine flu.

The Jefferson County school system reports 6 confirmed cases.  Trussville city schools reports 7 cases.  There have been 3 cases in the Homewood school system.  Parents say they worry that schools may not enforce hand washing procedures, making it easier to spread the highly contagious virus.

Doctor Robert Levin of Alabama Pediatrics says while his office has seen a few cases of swine flu this summer, they have been mild.  He says there are still a lot of unknowns with the virus, but that parents should not panic.  He says pay attention to old adages:  wash your hands, get plenty of rest, and keep kids home if they have a fever.  He also says parents should get their children vaccinated, both with the swine flu vaccine and the seasonal flu vaccine.
