Local group accepts challenge of helping the homeless

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - One group wants to tackle the problem of homelessness in Birmingham.

The Birmingham Coalition of the Homeless, founded by the Church of the Reconciler, is hoping to give homeless people what they need, which is permanent housing.

That group is holding a summit where city officials and the public can get a better idea of how hard it is for the homeless and offer solutions.

Current and former homeless people will speak at the summit about their harsh realities.

"The suffering they experience, the lack of access they have to get what they need to get off the streets, the unbelieveable brutality they experience, " said Lawton Higgs, Sr. with the Church of the Reconciler.

There are thousands of people who are either homeless or living in shelters in Birmingham.

The summit is Saturday morning at 9:00 at the Church of the Reconciler in Birmingham.

Higgs says in 2007 the city implemented a 10 year plan to end homelessness in the city, and he says he wants to know where the city stands with that plan.
