Jury recommends death in Steven Petric case

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A Jefferson County jury recommended death Friday in the murder trial of Steven Petric.

The jury recommended the sentence on Friday afternoon after finding Petric guilty of murder on Wednesday.

Petric was charged with the 1990 stabbing death of Toni Lim at her apartment in Homewood.

Friday's sentencing verdict was only a recommendation to the judge, who will decide on October 15 whether Petric will be sentenced to death or life in prison without parole.

The case remained unsolved for 16 years until evidence was matched to Petric's DNA in a national database. Petric was serving a 26-year sentence in Illinois for the 1994 armed robbery of a Joliet, Ill. woman who was killed in a similar manner as Lim. Petric was acquitted of murdering the woman.
