Governor Riley signs Jeffco occupational tax and accountability bills

MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) - Governor Bob Riley has signed the Jefferson County occupational tax and accountability bills into law. The occupational tax bill passed 12-9 in the senate today with ten abstaining and the accountability bill passed 30-0 with one abstaining.

The new occupational tax is set at .45% and includes professionals. It will begin January 1st of 2010. The old Jefferson County occupational tax at .45% that excludes professionals will continue until the end of 2009.

The accountability bill will no longer include hiring a comptroller for Jefferson County and will return to the House for another vote. Also, the accountability bill will have to be voted on by the Jefferson County Commission to be implemented.
