Mayor wants pardon for foot soldiers

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford asked the city council Tuesday to issue a pardon to all foot soldiers who were wrongly arrested during the civil rights era.

During Tuesday's city council meeting, Langford said it was finally time for the city to admit its wrongdoing during the time and pardon those who were arrested.

The mayor said many foot soldiers might not want their arrests wiped cleaned from their records because it showed the price that was paid.

Rev. Calvin Woods, the wife of Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, and former U.S. Attorney Doug Jones who prosecuted the 16th Street church bombing case, spoke about the importance of the idea during Tuesday's city council meeting.
