Four new cities participate in tax free holiday

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Back to school means big deals for shoppers this weekend, including four new cities taking part in the state's tax free holiday weekend.

It started at midnight Friday, August 7th and runs through midnight, Sunday, August 9th.

This year shoppers can go to Leeds, Lincoln, Morris and Chelsea and be expempt from paying state and municipal tax.  But because Jefferson county is not taking part in the holiday this year, there are some stores in Leeds and Morris where county tax will have to be paid.

At The Shoe Department in Chelsea, shoppers took advantage of the deal.  Assistant Manager Kimberly Swain said the store was packed from the time they opened at 9:00.

A sticker on the store's window advocates for shopping local.  Swain said she is glad the city jumped on board the holdiay.

"It keeps the money within Chelsea and allows the city to use it towards things more important," she said.

Beverly Burton and her daughter, Mya, drove about 20 minutes from Sylacauga to take part in the deal.

"I love it," Burton said. "That way, I would come here first and if I find everything I want here, I don't have to go to Anniston."
