Editorial: Jefferson County financial crisis

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The following is an editorial from WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, August 4, 2009.

Do we really let Jefferson County go down in flames? Perhaps, if we cared as much about our community as we do Alabama and Auburn we might get something done!

As we watched this unfold in the media, we may have said "I'm only one person, what can I do...or, I didn't elect these people, it's not my problem." With more than 60% of the County workforce on unpaid leave, at some point, when you need a county service...like a driver's license or auto tag, it will become your problem! None of us is immune to the effects of this crisis.

Folks, the county commissioners serve at your pleasure, it's time to step up and let them know how you feel. And, let us know whether it has begun to impact you and your family.
