Sue Schmitz to spend 30 months in prison

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Former State Legislator Sue Schmitz will spend the next 30 months in prison.  A Federal Judge ordered Schmitz to report to prison September 30, 2009. She will also have to serve three years of supervised release after her prison sentence and pay restitution of $177,000, and serve 360 hours of community service.

Schmitz was convicted on federal fraud charges in February, after a jury found her guilty on three counts of mail fraud and four counts of fraud involving a program receiving federal funds.

Prosecutors accused Schmitz of using political connections to create a community relations job with the Community Intensive Training for Youth program and getting $177,251 in pay while doing little or no work from February 2003 to October 2006.
