Editorial: Green jobx expo

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The following is an editorial from WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, July 21, 2009.

Jobs...potentially thousands of new jobs for Birmingham and Central Alabama...that's why you should be interested in a conference coming to Birmingham next week.  The Southeastern Region Green Building Focus Conference and Expo, July 27-29, at the BJCC, will bring the world's leading authorities on the rapidly growing business of green construction and design, to our fair city.
Birmingham is strategically located within a 500 mile radius of 15 states...that is important because, manufacturing, to qualify as a green product...that product can not be transported more than 500 miles, making Birmingham a potential hub for sustainable materials distribution and sustainable design and construction in the South.
We have several green builders in our area, already, and those hosting the conference believe we can attract many more.   Next week more than 1,500 folks will have the opportunity to see our potential...and we hope they will!
To quote conference hosts: "Green building practices have become the standard: innovation in construction is emerging at an unprecedented rate."  The potential for lots of new jobs in an exciting new industry right here in Birmingham... that's about as good as it gets. Keep your fingers crossed!
