BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The following is an editorial from WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, July 14, 2009.
Jefferson County is bleeding and state lawmakers have the power to stop it. But, every day they delay... good people are getting hurt, people who have done nothing but play by the rules. Workers have seen their pay slashed. Now... layoffs and service cuts. Public safety and economic development are threatened. As dysfunctional as the County Commission sometimes is... even 'they' didn't cause this. It started years ago when state lawmakers demanded pork money from the tax. When the county wouldn't play ball, lawmakers retaliated by repealing the tax. When, they re-passed it, they made a procedural mistake, and a judge ruled it illegal. Chairman of the House delegation, John Rogers, has refused to discuss reinstating the tax unless professionals are included. That's fair. Everyone should pay. But, professionals shouldn't be taxed twice. So, let them deduct their business license tax. It's time for state lawmakers to stop the "my way or the highway"
approach. That highway is a road to nowhere.
