UA med student trained under surgeon general pick

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - LaTosha Seliby can't hide her excitement over Dr. Regina Benjamin's nomination as the next U.S. Surgeon General.

Seliby spent two months earlier this year training under Dr. Benjamin at her clinic in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. During that time, Seliby learned there's more to treating patients than simply prescribing the right medicine.

"Dr Benjamin is in the trenches doing the work everyday," Seliby said. "She sees patients. She helps make decisions. She's at the table for a lot of decision making."

President Obama praised Benjamin's work in the bayou and her determination to raise money to rebuild her clinic after hurricanes destroyed it twice.

Benjamin said being the surgeon general is every doctor's dream.

Seliby said from what she's seen, Dr. Benjamin is uniquely qualified for the job.
