Editorial: Jefferson County Sheriff's Department responses

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The following are responses to an editorial from WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, July 7, 2009.

Thank you for your comments to this week's editorial.

Response 1:

My name is Paula. With as many officers as we have now, the crime in the bham alabama area has topped the nation's largest cities this can not go unnoticed. I am opposed to any funding being cut to the minimum for the sheriff's dept, as well as for any government area that is going to provide care for health care as well as protection. That is two different types of protection but they all are very important to our citizens here in the state of Alabama. Thank You.

Response 2:

Hello my name is Evan. The sheriff's dept, I agree that public safety should be place at the top of our agenda, but sometimes you may have to cut back, but we must cut back without cutting public patrolling because public patrolling is what keeps crime rates down, property values up. So although we may have to cut maybe 10- 15 thousand dollars out of the sheriff's budget, keep public safety at the top of our priority and make the cuts the last thing on your mind.

Thank you for your responses to this week's editorial.

We look forward to hearing your comments on future editorials.
