Birmingham murder suspect shot

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A murder suspect became the victim of a violent crime.

Police say someone tried to kill Kandi Hawkins, 25, of Birmingham on Monday. She was found lying on the side of the road on 40th Avenue North, shot several times.

Hawkins was wanted by police for the May 3, 2009, shooting death of Lonnie Vaughn, 44, of Vestavia Hills.

Martez Seay is another suspect in Vaughn's killing. He remains in jail charged with capital murder.

Authorities are working to determine if Hawkin's shooting was connected to her alleged involvement in Vaughn's murder.

Police haven't released a motive in Vaughn's shooting death.

Vaughn's mother, Yvonne Vaughn, told FOX6 News Tuesday she is relieved her son's murder suspects are in custody, but still wants answers in his death.

A suspect is in custody for Hawkins' shooting.

Once Hawkins is released from the hospital, police said she will be taken into custody and charged with capital murder.
