Editorial: Hurt by those you love

Domestic violence can happen to anyone, literally anyone. It is a crime and it is unacceptable. If you suspect someone is a victim of domestic violence, talk to the victim. You may have to try several times before they will confide in you. And remember, if you see something, say something.

Editorial: This JUUL is no precious gem

As e-cigarettes and vapes become more popular with adult smokers trying to quit cigarettes, young people are also starting to use these devices. One device, that you may not be aware of, is becoming more and more popular with kids. It's called a JUUL. If you're a parent, you need to educate yourself.

Editorial: United we stand, divided we fall

United we stand, divided we fall: This phrase has permeated my thought after hearing about a local Birmingham African-American pastor showcasing divisive messages on each side of his church sign that read: "Black folks need to stay out of white churches" and "White folks refused to be our neighbors."

Editorial Feedback: We have your back

Our editorial earlier this week, commenting on the bullying experienced by our own WBRC FOX6 News reporter Melanie Posey on social media, prompted thousands of comments and shares on Facebook and numerous emails to me.

Editorial: Child abuse prevention month

April was first declared Child Abuse Prevention Month in 1983. Since then, April has been a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse.

Editorial Feedback: Step by step

Our editorial earlier this week commenting on the March For Our Lives marches last weekend and the young people leading them prompted the following feedback posted on our WBRC FOX6 News station Facebook page and emails sent directly to me.

Editorial: Step by Step

The following is an editorial from WBRC FOX6 News General Manager Collin Gaston, which first aired on Tuesday, March 27, 2018.

Editorial Feedback: Pivot Point

Our editorial commenting on guns in schools following the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida and here at home in Birmingham at Huffman High prompted the following feedback posted on our WBRC FOX6 News station Facebook page and emails sent directly to me.

Editorial: Pivot point

In February, we all watched in horror as the scene unfolded in Parkland, Florida as the tally of those killed rose to 17 on the grounds of Stoneman Douglas High School. Parents and family of those killed have been vocal that their children will not die in vain, and Florida has since passed legislation that would impose new restrictions on firearm sales and allow some teachers and staff to carry guns in school.

Editorial: History is watching

The headlines last week were horrifying. Again, our country is dealing with another mass school shooting. It's up to all of us to come up with sensible solutions that will keep us safe without violating our individual rights in a free society. There must be compromise. History is watching and so are our children.

Editorial: To protect and serve

There are times when the words shared by another need not be edited or expounded upon in any way, because the feelings conveyed are heartfelt, pure, and deserve sharing unadulterated. The following is from a Facebook post shared on Sunday at 5:36 a.m. from someone on the Bangor Maine Police Department.

Editorial: See something, say something

Kudos to the Alabama State Senate for passing a bill last Tuesday that establishes stronger penalties for anyone found guilty of obstructing an investigation into human trafficking.

Editorial: What's next?

For the literally billions of us who are on Facebook, we do tend to wake up to a different world every day, as Facebook endlessly changes what happens on our feeds.

Editorial: Cowards behind keyboards

To all the "bullies" out there, your words hurt; your words can even kill. This is why I will continue to use this editorial platform at least once a year, every year to bring attention to the devastation wreaked by bullying.

Editorial: Changing the atmosphere

As you look at your list of 2018 resolutions (if that's your thing), might I suggest you add one more, and that is make any place where you are, a better place because you're there.

Editorial Feedback: A life well lived

Our editorial earlier this week commenting on the passing of legendary FOX6 newsman, Bill Bolen, and the soon-to-be dedication of our WBRC FOX6 Bill Bolen Studio, prompted an enormous amount of feedback on our WBRC FOX6 News station Facebook page.

Editorial: A life well lived

"If you didn't like Bill Bolen, well - you probably couldn't like anybody." Those were the heartfelt words spoken by Mr. Bolen's longtime pastor at Brookwood Baptist on Saturday at his memorial, celebrating a life well lived.

Editorial: What a year it was

With 2017 now behind us, I wanted to reflect on the year that was and to remind myself of the "big events" that took place. Here's a ranking of the top U.S. searches for 2017.

Editorial: Losing with dignity

All of us lose sometimes. Even if we don't respect our opponent, we should show respect for how we as a society do things. There's no shame in losing, but there is in refusing to publicly accept it.

Editorial: Leading by example

Pro athletes are often criticized in our increasingly polarized society, but many make a huge difference in our world and should be applauded.

Editorial: Keeping it local

Shopping locally supports our area's workforce and keeps money in our community. But, it's just as important to give locally. If you are able, make this the year that you help others who are less fortunate.

Editorial: Kryptonite

I've got to be honest with you, while the saga that is our Senate race lends itself to all kinds of commentary, I've been hesitant to weigh in. The reason - it's pure kryptonite.

Editorial: Why are we still doing this?

Daylight saving time. Moving the clock up in the spring and back in the fall. Making that adjustment in time twice each year is at the least annoying and at the most, costly.

Editorial: Fostering a bright future

On any given day, there are nearly 428,000 children in foster care in the U.S. In 2015 alone, there were 670,000.

Editorial: Maybe this time

Maybe down the road, the loved ones of those who died needlessly in Las Vegas will be able to say that the night their loved ones died was the beginning of the solution to this problem.

Editorial: Dying art of disagreement

This is a nation founded on disagreement. But we need to be able to talk about things rationally.

Editorial: Common good

Americans, in times of crisis, do what we do best and put aside differences to work together for the common good.

Editorial: Thoughts and prayers

Ben Abercrombie and his family need our thoughts and prayers right now.

Editorial: We need to hear from you

Two GOP candidates are facing off for Alabama's Senate seat - Luther Strange and Roy Moore.

Editorial: DirecTV

Tuesday night at 10:59 p.m., WBRC FOX6 News's extended agreement with DIRECTV will expire and they may drop this station from their lineup.

Editorial: DIRECTV

I am pleased to let you know WBRC FOX6 News' carriage agreement with DIRECTV has been temporarily extended, ensuring you will continue to receive this channel through Tuesday, September 5th.

Editorial: DirecTV

In my last message to the community, I made a commitment to keep DirecTV viewers informed about ongoing negotiations to keep WBRC FOX6 News on their system.

Guest Editorial: Honoring the 42nd Rainbow Division

At 5 p.m. on Monday, August 28, a historic event will occur at Montgomery's Union Station.

Editorial: Hating hate

I hate - hate. Hate is not a word or feeling that I regularly use or experience, but simply stated, it's what was represented boldly in Charlottesville, Virginia over the weekend.

Editorial: Back to School

Summer is winding down and for many, school starts back up this week and next. Over the summer, I am sure you noticed traffic has been less hectic and stressful.

Editorial: Cellphone danger

The story about 14-year-old Madison Coe, reported by our sister station KCBD in Lubbock, Texas, who was killed when electrocuted while using her cellphone in the bathtub, hit close to home with me.

Editorial: Lend a hand

This month, two life threatening situations were reported on extensively by numerous media outlets detailing similar situations.

Editorial: Double tax

Is it fair to make elderly Americans list Social Security as a taxable income benefit when Social Security is financed by tax dollars?

Editorial: Pay attention

No message received or sent on your wireless device is worth putting your or others' lives at risk.

Editorial: Buckle up

As we move into the heart of summer and into prime vacation season, lots of people will be on the road.

Editorial Feedback: I'll have another

Our editorial earlier this week commenting on the upcoming price increase on alcohol in our state that will provide additional funds to support Alabama's courts and District Attorneys, prompted a lot of feedback on our station Facebook page and WBRC.com.

  Editorial: I'll have another

It looks like Alabama has figured out a way to raise much needed money for Alabama's District Attorney's and our state court system: boosting the price of booze.

Editorial: Viewer Feedback: Respect

Our editorial last week, commenting on the recent assault on a journalist by a congressional candidate and a call for more decorum when dealing with the press, prompted many comments on our station Facebook page, as well as emails directed to me.

Editorial: Respect

An assault on a journalist by a congressional candidate (now, elected) is the most recent example of disrespect for journalism, and more importantly disrespect for the constitutional recognition of a free press.

Editorial: Karma

How far is too far when it comes to comedy? How far can one push the envelope before stepping over the line? Kathy Griffin's "comedic" bit showcasing the decapitated head of President Trump went too far.

Editorial: Grace Under Pressure

The following is an editorial from WBRC FOX6 News General Manager Collin Gaston, which first aired on Wednesday, May 24, 2017:

Editorial: It's go time

A month ago, Governor Kay Ivey, in one of her first decisions as Alabama Governor, authorized a special election allowing Alabama voters to decide who would fill Jeff Sessions' vacated U.S. Senate seat.

Editorial: "If only I had done more?"

According to a recent carinsurance.com study, Alabama has risen to the fifth most dangerous state for teenage drivers.

Editorial: Get the boot

I was blown away after our WBRC FOX6 Investigator report that highlighted the more than $2.34 million in unpaid parking tickets owed to the City of Birmingham.

Editorial Feedback: Shocking revelation

Our editorial last week commenting on the recent electric shock drownings of two Alabama women at Lake Tuscaloosa prompted many comments and shares on our station Facebook page. Most of the comments surrounded the fact that people had never heard of such a danger.

Editorial: Stop this practice!

This system of overbooking flights and then paying people not to take that flight needs to be stopped.
