Q: What is the Rising Star program?

The WBRC FOX6 News Rising Star sponsored by America’s First Credit Union is a program set up to highlight star seniors at Central Alabama area high schools. Students will be nominated by their high school counselor and must meet certain criteria. Students must have a minimum of a 3.5 GPA while participating in extra-curricular events like band, sports, volunteer work, etc. There will be 30 weekly winners, who will be highlighted on WBRC FOX6 News. Those 30 students will then compete for one of four $5,000 scholarships (will be awarded by America’s First Credit Union).

Q: How do I apply?

Submissions to Rising Star are not open to the public. Nominations have to be made by a high school guidance counselor. Please check with your guidance counselor for more information about the campaign.

Q: When will the weekly winners be announced?

Weekly winners will be announced Thursday during the 5 p.m. newscasts. The first winner will be on September 7, 2017. Winners will also be placed on the station website under the “Rising Star” link on the homepage and in the WBRC News app.

2017 Rules No purchase necessary. A purchase does not improve one’s chance of winning. To Enter: The “Rising Star” Student Awards will begin accepting nominations August 14, 2017. “Rising Star” students will be featured on WBRC FOX6 News weekly beginning the week of September 4, 2017. There will be a total of thirty (30) winners. To enter, a student must be nominated by their counselor or principal. Each winner can only win once within a school year. Schools may submit as many students for nomination as they would like; however, only one winner will be selected per school. Eligibility: This award is only open to High School Seniors enrolled during the ‘17-‘18 school year who are planning to enroll in college Fall 2018. Each entrant is judged on academics as well as extracurricular activities and community service. Children of employees of America's First Federal Credit Union and WBRC FOX6 News and advertising and promotion agencies and persons living in the households of each of these individuals, whether related or not, are ineligible. Void where prohibited or restricted by law. Student winners and their parent/legal guardian agree to have the student’s photo taken upon acceptance of the award and published by WBRC FOX6 News and America’s First Federal Credit Union. Odds: Each weekly winner will receive a trophy, $50 Visa gift card, and a prize package from America's First Federal Credit Union. Each winner will then write an essay on an assigned topic. A third party independent panel of judges will choose four $5,000 scholarship recipients based on the written essays. Each weekly award winner will have an equal chance of winning. Prize Restrictions: The prize is not transferable. No substitution or cash equivalent of prize permitted except at the sole discretion of sponsor. Federal, state, and local taxes and any expenses relating to the acceptance and use of the prize not specified are the responsibility of the winners. Scholarship funds will be held by America's First Federal Credit Union until written verification is received by the college registrar where the scholarship winner is enrolled. Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the institution in the name of the recipient. Funds are to be used only for tuition, room and board, or books. Scholarship Prize Notification: There will be a banquet held in the spring which all weekly winners will be invited to attend. The scholarship winners will be announced during the banquet. Weekly Prize Notifications: Nominating counselor will be notified (via phone) if their student is selected as a weekly winner. Publicity: By entering this promotion, each winner acknowledges that WBRC FOX6 News and America's First Federal Credit Union have the right to publicize and broadcast each winner’s name, voice, and likeness, the fact that he or she won, and all matters incidental thereto.
