Several children sick after party at Oak Mountain

PELHAM, AL (WBRC) – 93 people have reported becoming severely ill after attending a party at Oak Mountain State Park, according to a parent of two children who attended.

On Thursday, May 27th, Everest Academy held an end-of-the-year party at Oak Mountain with about 300 people present. On Friday night, parents began to report their children becoming extremely sick.

Debbie Spradlin with Everest Academy told FOX6 News that the children and 1 adult were sick after the party with 2 of them being hospitalized. Spradlin says that surveying the students showed that the one thing in common with the persons who did get sick was that they all swam in or came in contact with Oak Mountain Lake.

Spadlin adds in her email:

"The results of the surveys I have been taking have shown that some of the children ate from the potluck and some did not. None of their parents are sick (except the one sick adult). ALL of the children swam in the lake. I contacted the one sick adult, and she stated that she played with her 3-year-old in the water and had a cut on her knee. Out of the sick children, some of their siblings are also sick but not all and none of their parents."

Oak Mountain officials say they are running tests, but have not found anything wrong with the water.

The Shelby County Department has begun investigating.
