BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Hoover police have charged a suspect with multiple charges after a standoff in Birmingham this afternoon.

Mario Derrell Slaughter, 32, is charged with second-degree burglary, third-degree theft of property, first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree kidnapping.

Slaughter, a Hoover resident, was taken into custody by Birmingham PD after barricading himself inside a home in the 3500 block of 45th Street SW when police attempted to serve warrants. The standoff lasted four hours.

Hoover police say that at 7:37 a.m. on Wednesday they responded to a report of a home invasion at the 3600 building of The Willows Apartments off Lorna Road. The victim reported that at approximately 3 a.m. she awoke to find the suspect standing in the hallway.

Authorities say the victim said the suspect said he had a gun and threatened to harm her if she did not comply. The suspect took several items from her purse then sexually assaulted her before forcing her to leave the apartment with him.

The suspect ordered the victim to drive him to Bessemer, where he made her stop at a convenience store, authorities say. The suspect then forced her to drive him to another Bessemer location where he exited her vehicle. Police say the victim immediately returned to Hoover and reported the crime.

Slaughter is being held on $85,000 bond.
