UAB Blazers inspire young girls despite loss to Rice

Blazers inspire young girls

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The UAB women’s basketball team played Rice Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena in a battle for the No. 1 spot in Conference USA.

After a back-and-forth battle that kept UAB on its toes, the Blazers were outscored in the final seven minutes of the game. Rice went on a 17-8 run to close out the game to beat the Blazers 55-43 to remain at the top of C-USA.

“Even though not all of our shots were falling, we stuck as a team through all of that, we’re just all here for each other,” said UAB Guard Deanna Kuzmanic.

“Whether if we would have won this game, it does not define our season. We lost it obviously today, but it’s not going to define our season, there’s a lot of basketball in front of us,” said UAB head coach Randy Norton.

“We just didn’t get done what we needed to at the end, the effort was there we just didn’t execute,” Kuzmanic added.

Although the Blazers are disappointed in their loss, this game was about more than what happened on the scoreboard.

Saturday was National Girls and Women in Sports Day, and the Blazers hope their fight and determination on the court inspires younger generations,

“To me it shows the courage of women and not backing down and showing courage,” said Blazer fan Alyvia Mcelwaney.

“It inspires me because I play basketball too and it encourages me to push myself harder and do better,” added Blazers fan Octavia Hawkins.

UAB drops to 18-3 on the season, 6-2 in C-USA play. But the Blazers will take the win off the court after encouraging young girls to never give up on their dreams.
