BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - There’s a new sheriff in Blount County, and within his first 24 hours, he’s already very busy.
Sheriff Mark Moon said becoming Sheriff has always been a goal of his, but didn’t anticipate it happening this soon.
But now that he has the title, he has plenty of plans for the county. Sheriff Moon said one of the biggest problems in Blount County is drugs.
He said 90 percent of the county’s crime-- burglaries, thefts, and even murders-- stems from drugs.
He said even with limited resources, he’s determined to make his deputies more visible on the streets to get more drugs off the streets.
“I told my guys in the meeting yesterday, I expect you to be proactive. No more sitting around under a shade tree waiting for calls to come in. You get out, patrol your neighborhoods, patrol your churches, patrol your businesses, and stop people who are out of the ordinary or unusual in places they don’t belong,” said Sheriff Moon.
