Blount Co. man found dead on side of road, friends begging for answers

Blount County man found dead on side of road

BLOUNT COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - The Blount County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a man was found dead on the side of the road Monday morning.

The man was identified as David “Bird” Dorning. He was in his early fifties.

His friends, family, and the newly sworn-in Sheriff are asking for people to speak up to help them determine what happened.

“We loved him. We just want to know what happened," said friend Hope McCoy. “He was just the heart of everything. He was the go-to guy.”

So when McCoy got the call from her daughter, her heart broke.

“She asked me had I heard about somebody getting run over. I told her no. I went to eat with my grandson at school. She called me while I was at school. She said, ‘Mom. It was him. It was Bird.’ She was upset,” McCoy said.

The newly sworn-in Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon got the call just hours into his first day.

“A family member found him on the side of the road,” Moon said. “It was pretty jarring. One of those things you don’t expect to hit your very first day in office.”

Sheriff Moon said it happened some time between 7 and 8 a.m. Monday near the 1900 block of Skyball Road.

McCoy said Dorning was walking from his home on that street to his cousin’s house, where his car broke down the night before.

“We have witnesses that said that they saw him walking down the road after 7 a.m.," said the Sheriff.

But what happened after that is still a mystery.

And now Sheriff Moon and McCoy are asking anyone driving that road Monday morning to come forward if they saw anything.

“We just really want to know,” said McCoy. “And we would appreciate anybody that would come out and tell us anything. Just the least little thing could be something that could help.”

The Sheriff’s Office is now looking over home surveillance cameras near the scene to piece together any new details.

The body was taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to determine a cause of death.

If you have any information, you’re asked to call the Blount County Sheriff’s Office at (205) 625-4127.
