BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham city leaders and the community continue to mourn the passing of Birmingham Police Sgt. Wytasha Carter.
He and another officer were shot while on duty early Sunday morning. The other officer is still in the hospital at UAB.
A moment of silence for both men was held at the beginning of the Birmingham City Council meeting Tuesday morning.
"They (police) make a lot of sacrifices, all the way to the ultimate sacrifice which Sgt. Carter and his family made on behalf of the city of Birmingham," said Councilor Hunter Williams, who is also the chair of the public safety committee.
Mayor Randall Woodfin also talked about Carter during the council meeting, as well as later during his state of the city address.
“If you were like me on Sunday, your soul was shaken to its core to receive the news that a police officer had been shot, and even harder to receive the news that an officer died,” said Woodfin.
