New elementary school opening in Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - Tuscaloosa City Schools is opening a brand new elementary school this semester.

The new and improved Skyland Elementary School looks nothing like the previous school built back in the 60′s. So what’s new about the school? Principal Vertis Giles said just about everything is upgraded, and you can see the excitement on the students' faces when they walk in.

New technology, interactive learning boards, a new media center, and library are all part of the improvements. Giles said they’re are also eager to have parents take advantage of their new Parent Involvement Center to get families more engaged in their students' school work.

"Having the new-ness kind of gives us the opportunity to capitalize on parents' enthusiasm as well. We would really like to increase our parental engagement involvement, have them in to be able to see what is new to be able to help their children, and also partner with us,” said Giles.

The way the new school is built is designed to add on and expand to the building if needed as this area continues to grow.
