BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Tyler Johnston III and the UAB offense got things started with a bang Saturday.
Johnston III connected with Kailon Carter on his first pass of the game for a 50-yard touchdown, and the Blazers never looked back, defeating UTSA 52-3.
The win comes with breaking a handful of records. The Blazers' 668 total yards of offense sets a new record, while their 419 rushing yards was also record-setting. UAB also extended its current program-record home winning streak to 11.
The win moves UAB to 8-1 on the year, which is a continuation of its best start in program history. With three games remaining, the Blazers have matched its win total from a year ago, which is a program record, and can break that record next weekend.
Johnston III threw for 249 yards and three touchdowns on 10 of 17 passing in his first career start. He added 62 yards and another score on the ground.
Xavier Ubosi was Johnston III’s favorite target, with the pair connecting three times for 71 yards and two scores. Kendall Parham added three catches for 47 yards.
The UAB rushing attack was by committee, but Spencer Brown led the way with 147 yards and two scores on 20 yards. James Noble III added 92 yards and Andre Wilson had a touchdown.
UAB remains undefeated and in the driver’s seat of C-USA as it hosts Southern Miss next week at 6:30 p.m.
