JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says it’s possible the driver at fault in a wreck that killed a Center Point city employee on Thursday suffered a medical episode that caused them to wreck.
County authorities are working to confirm this and continue their investigation of the fatal traffic wreck that happened Thursday in the 1500 block of Center Point Parkway.
At about 11:15 a.m., deputies were called to a traffic accident involving three vehicles and a pedestrian.
Police say the pedestrian, an adult female, died at the scene from her injuries. Two other people sustained minor injuries.
The pedestrian involved was a Center Point city employee who was planting flowers in the median when she was struck by a vehicle.
The Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.
The name of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification. Center Point Mayor Tommy Henderson did say the woman had three adult children. She had worked for the city of Center Point for five years and was the head of the city’s horticulture department.
Henderson described the victim as “very sweet, calm, laid back, but serious about her job.” He says everyone loved her and considered her family.
Chief Deputy Randy Christian issued the following statement on Friday:
“With what we have learned so far it is possible the driver at fault had a medical episode just prior to the accident. We are working to confirm that and the accident is still under investigation. At this point there is no evidence to indicate this was anything other than a tragic accident. Our hearts and prayers are with all involved, especially the family and friends of this beloved woman that lost her life.”
