TUSCALOOSA- AL (WBRC) -A Tuscaloosa family is desperate to find the person responsible for hitting their loved one on the interstate and leaving him for dead.

19-year old Hamzah Tarawneh remains in the hospital with severe injuries after authorities said he was hit by a truck on I-20/59 a week ago.

His sister Natasha Bates said he was driving from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa to visit a friend when his car ran out of gas near exit 76.

She said when he tried to walk to the closest gas station he was hit by a dark colored truck that took off.

A witness she said tried to get his license plate but wasn't successful.

Now the family is pleading for the driver to do the right thing and come forward.

“I wouldn’t want any other family to go through what we are going through with Hamzah. I mean he was just you just hit someone and he was just laying there in the street with no help. He did lose a lot of blood and they did have to give him a lot of blood in the hospital,” said Bates.

Friends and family have started a GoFundMe account to help pay for Hamzah’s medical expenses.
