STARKVILLE, MS (WBRC) - There are certain things you need to do to win. And Auburn didn’t do them tonight.
The Tigers fell to Mississippi State 23-9 in one of their most frustrating performances of the year.
Auburn had no answer for Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, who rushed for nearly 200 yards and threw for 69 yards. Fitzgerald had both Bulldog touchdowns.
Several missed opportunities were too much for the Tigers to overcome. An early missed field goal by Anders Carlson did not allow Auburn to break a 3-3 lead, with Mississippi State taking the lead its next possession. Late in the first half, Auburn fumbled a punt return, which the Bulldogs countered on with a touchdown on the last play of the half. In the third quarter, the Tigers fumbled on the 1-yard line, with Mississippi State recovering the ball in the end zone.
Auburn returns home next week to face Tennessee at 11 a.m.
