Chelsea looks to adopt new building standards

Chelsea's plan for a 280 makeover

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -The City of Chelsea wants to make it obvious that you’re in Chelsea while driving along Highway 280. One way to accomplish this—the look of the buildings.

That idea is all part of an overlay plan that was unveiled Tuesday night at a public hearing at Chelsea City Hall. The plan will dictate building materials for construction, improve access to adjacent businesse,s and suggest how much landscaping businesses need.

"These are the kinds of steps we have to take as a community that is growing, thriving right now. If we don’t get ahead of the growth and really be strategic about what we want in the future of our town, then I think we just leave it to chance. So I’m really encouraged by the meeting tonight,” says Chelsea resident James Daniels.

Planners are going to take ideas from tonight’s meeting and update the proposal. It could come up for a vote as soon as next month.
