Editorial: Just Do-nate It

Editorial: Just Do-nate It

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The following is an editorial from WBRC FOX6 News General Manager Collin Gaston, which first aired on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018:

Before you even go to your keyboards to tell me I’m taking sides, I want to be clear: I’m not taking a position on the Nike debate.

But, I am going to take a position on destroying clothing and shoes.

When Nike released their new image campaign featuring former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, a lot of people were energized in two very different ways: some excited that Nike is supporting him, others furious for the same reason. It’s simply not my place to tell you how you should feel about such a visceral topic.

But when I see people burning Nike shoes and shirts online, I have to just shake my head.

I understand these people want to send a message on how they feel about Nike, and I understand they don’t want to wear that brand anymore. That’s their decision. But we have a lot of people who need clothing and need shoes.

If you love what Nike is doing and want to rush out and buy more stuff, that’s your right as an American, go out and buy another pair of shoes with that swoosh on the side.

If you hate what they are doing and don’t want to ever wear them again, that’s also your right as an American. But instead of turning something you already spent your own money on into ash, turn it into something positive by donating all that Nike gear to those in need. The people with newer clothes on their backs and shoes on their feet will appreciate it.

Just another way that as Americans, we can deeply disagree, but turn that disagreement into something positive along the way.
